During the period of Mogul rule, it was said one who contolled Delhi controlled India. The Moghul kings who tried to shift their capitals to some other places had to come back to Delhi. It was not different when British colonized India. The East India Company under whose banner British had entered India had established themselves in Calcutta. But they knew that unless they controlled Delhi their writ cannot run all over India and they cannot control India. Therefore they marched towards Delhi and captured Delhi and British established their capital in Delhi and started ruling this vast country from Delhi.
One would wonder why am I writing about Delhi. There is a reason. This is in connection with the street demonstrations taking place in Egypt. I was wondering why the demonstration is taking place in Tahrir square which is also called as Liberation square. I heard some commentator saying that one who controls Tahrir square controls Cairo and one who controls Cairo controls Egypt. That is why the entire attention is on Tahrir square. All are heading towards Tahrir square. That may be the reason why the pro Mubarak demonstrators stormed into Tahrir Square to drive away anti-Mubarak demonstrators from the square.
Therefore I tried to know something more of Tahrir Square. It is the name given to a large public square in the downtown of Cairo. Many important institutions such as The Egyptian Museum, Government Offices, international hotels etc are located in that area. May be the significance prompted the pro Mubarak supporters to gate crash into the square to push out the anti Mubarak demonstrators. In short to break the unity of anti Mubarakdemonstrators.
On Tuesday, there was festive scene one could see in the square. Young men and women, old men and women, children etc. could be seen marching to the square to express their solidarity with the protesters. It was a non- violent march and assembly. As the day light started ebbing out, they did not move from the place but stayed on. The protest continued peacefully. But as the evening dawned on Wednesday, the peaceful demonstration turned bloody one. A large crowd by walk, on horses back, camel back, in buses, cars etc. barged into the square forcibly. They were not checked by the police or by the army. Thus they could enter the square. Then there was chaos, violence etc. Three dead and 600 injured. Let us wait and see how the ground situation will develop. The entire world is watching the developments in Tahrir Square. Because Tahrir Square is Egypt.
