Pompei – the LOST CITY

pompei

When I was studying for Intermediate examination soon after leaving Higher Secondary school, we had a subject called Ancient Greece and Roman History. I had studied about the glory of Pompei and its ultimate destruction. I had come across the story of ‘Lost City of Pompei’. It is a fascinating study of Pompei. Naturally when we were touring Italy, Pompei was one of the places we had marked for our visit. Therefore it is but natural my friend said we should proceed to Pompei

The city was built in the 8th Century B.C. by ancient Greek settlers in the bay of Naples. The resident of Pompei were enjoying a very sophisticated city life with all the amenities which one could get in those days such as good roads, pavements, water facilities etc. Because of its lifestyle, it attracted rich and influential to that City and became known for art and artistic works and collections. But the city was destroyed in the year 79A.D. when Mount Vesuius erupted sending out plumes of ashes, pumice and other rocks and scorching hot volcanic gases so high that people could see it from hundreds of miles around” It is said that within a day the entire city was buried under he ashes and it left about 2000 persons dead of the population of about 20000. Because of the blanket cover of ashes etc. the city buried under it preserved everything in the same conmition as it was on the date of eruption. The guide said that frozen skeletons in the same condition as they were trying to flee the city, fruits and bread in the jars, goods littered all over the streets the excavators could see when they discovered this lost city in about 1748 when a group of explorers started digging the same. I have taken a few photos of the lost city of pompei which you may see herebelow.
