In the year 1948 on this day, the greatest apostle of peace was assassinated and plunged the entire world into darkness. He was like a beacon of light for all that is good for the human beings. If one reads his writings, one can visualize how great were his thoughts. Such a frail man wearing only a small loin cloth could march a nation of crores of people towards freedom through non violence means. One should not forget that Gandhi was leading not literate or educated people in the western sense of the word but he was leading people who were wise who could understand his language that is the language of the soul and humanity. He belived in man and he had immense faith in the goodness of man. It is this faith that gave him the strength to face the mightiest power on earth in those days. That is the real greatness of man. He always abhorred violence. He always maintained that ‘non-violence, which is the quality of the heart, cannot come by an appeal to the brain’. He maintained ‘ a small body of determined spirits fired by an unquenchable faith in their mission can alter the course of history’ He believed in peaceful means to attain the goal. He said ‘there is no way to peace; peace is the way’ He always believed that .
‘the cause of liberty becomes a mockery if the price to be paid is the wholesale destruction of those who are to enjoy liberty’ His message is for eternity. They can be applied in any political or even spiritual discourses. His non violence is not meek submission to the opponent but as he said ‘that which looks for mercy from an opponent is not non-violence.’
