If one asks me who won the British Election of 1010, my emphatic reply is Nick Clegg of Liberal Democrat. Yes he has lost a few seats and won only 52 ( until I wrote this ) seats in the election. Conservatives  have won 291 seats as against 247 of Labour Party.  Others have won 27 seats. Now who can form the Government. To form a Government, a party should need 326 seats and how can it be reached. A number game is going on in Britain  This means the Britain has elected a hung parliament.
One should know why the ‘ mother of parliament’ has elected a hung parliament. Couldn’t they have done better. The malady of what the critics say ‘ punishing the politicians’ by the electorate is now afflicted the parliamentary system in Britain. However this is a  real challenge for British politicians. They should show that there is no room for ‘horse trading’ They said that the party having highest number may seek support from another party having enough members and form a coalition government to reach the magic figure of 326. It is said and in fact, emphasizesed, that the British Monarchy will not play a role in this horse trading. This is a strange submission from the Head of the Parliament system. In one way, it is correct also because one cannot expect British Queen to take the role of helping either of the parties to reach the magical figure.
In this scenario only the role of Nick Clegg, the leader of Liberal Democrat assumes importance. His utterances if one follows carefully, looks as though he is leaning towards Conservatives. He says that in the best tradition of parliamentary democratic system the party having highest number of MPs should be called to form the Government. He knows and all know that means Conservatives should get the call from the Queen. How can Conservatives from a stable government when they have only 291 members. He knows that ‘others’ have only 27 members. It shows that he is inclined to support Conservatives perhaps if they concede his demand for electoral reform by following Proportional Representation system to which Conservatives are opposed. A very interesting situation. One cannot think of supporting the Labour party which has been given a good drubbing at the election. They should not also try to form the Government as they have been rejected by the electorate. People of Britain want a ‘change’ ( is it Obama’s )
It is a piquant situation for the parliamentary system. Indian democratic system should keep a close watch over the Government formation that is taking place in Britain. India has now resigned to it’s fate of going for coalition governments. The days of landslide victory for a single political party are the things of the past. It is good that the ‘mother of parliament’ also faces a similar challenge and it will be good situation for political pundits to see whether the next government in Britain is formed through gentlemanly consensus or through horse trading. Let us wait and see whether the MPs will become horses?!!!
